KU Class Recap – Tuesday night I talked with Barrett Sydnor’s graduate level integrated marketing communications class about strategic thinking. The class members were great and very engaged in applying exercises to their class projects.
One topic was how to introduce strategy and creativity at work. We covered things they could do and that cultivating creativity in the workplace depends a lot on what YOU bring to the job.

Nice idea. These ads provided some great creative thoughts. However, Mike, isn't "Real Simple" a chick magazine? :)

The demographics for "Real Simple" do probably skew toward women.
And that goes right along with the post about finding magazines outside your area of typical interests/strengths for new ideas! Seriously, I've done the random magazine input exercise with a variety of magazines outside my interest areas (i.e., video gamer magazines, X games, auto racing, Oprah, golf, etc.) and "Real Simple" has probably had a higher yield of ideas than any of them. I was working through the July issue on a plane from Cleveland to KC, with a focus on generating new ideas for the blog. As testament to its benefits, the guy sitting next to me was watching me and said that more ideas came from the magazine than he usually has in a week.
"Real Simple" is a good magazine to try because it has a lot of pages and a really strong mix of graphics, text, and ads to prompt ideas. Plus since its theme is simplicity, it triggers a lot of "do this more simply" type ideas.
BTW - Thanks for your input previously, which caused me to simply show the original sticky notes vs. typing them up. It's all part of trying to create a little more variety on the blog.
